In der ersten Staffen der “Golden Girls” trat Murray Hamilton als Blanches Vater Big Daddy auf und wollte Country Sänger werden. Der Charakter schien für ein Comeback geeignet und wurde in der zweiten Staffel 1986 wieder eingesetzt. Hamilton war jedoch in der Zwischenzeit verstorben, und die Rolle wurde an den Schauspielerveteran David Wayne vergeben. In der Folge besucht er Blanche, um ihr mitzuteilen, dass er wieder heiraten wird und stellt Blanche seine junge, schöne Verlobte vor.
David Wayne wird am 30. Januar 1914 geboren, beginnt seine Schauspielerkarriere eher zufällig Mitte der 30iger Jahre in Cleveland und wird dann im zweiten Weltkrieg nach Nordafrika abgezogen. Nach dem Krieg zieht er nach New York, um sich der Schauspielerei zu widmen.
1947 erhält Wayne für seine Darstellung in „Finian´s Rainbow“ einen Tony Award (es war das erste Jahr, dass Tonys für Broadway Produktionen vergeben wurden) und einen Theatre World Award und seine Broadwaykarriere geht steil nach oben. Es folgen u.a. die Originalaufführungen von „Mr. Roberts“ (1948), „The Teahouse of the August Moon“ (1953, noch ein Tony für Wayne), „Send me no Flowers“ (1960), „After the Fall“ (1964, Arthur Miller), „Incident at Vichy“ (1964, Arthur Miller). Obwohl seine bedeutetsten Bühnenrollen in den Verfilmungen an andere Schauspieler gingen (die Rolle in “Mr. Roberts“ ging an Jack Lemmon, die in „Teahouse“ an Marlon Brando“ und die in „Flowers“ an Rock Hudson), genoss Wayne eine eigene Filmkarriere in Hollywood, obwohl er bis in die 70iger Jahre nicht offiziell nach Los Angeles umzog.
David Wayne macht sein Kinodebüt 1947 in „Portrait of Jennie“ und erhält dennoch ein „and introducing“ in der Tracy/Hepburn Komödie „Adam´s Rib“ (1949). Begin der 50iger Jahre wird er von 20th Century Fox unter Vertrag genommen und spielt über viele Jahre verschiedenste Charakterrollen. Unter anderem spielt er dreimal an der Seite von Marilyn Monroe: 1951 „As Young as you Feel“, 1951 „We´re Not Married“ („Wir sind gar nicht verheiratet“) und 1953 in „How to Marry a Millionaire“ („Wie angelt man sich einen Millionär“). Eine weitere Schauspielerin, die oft an seiner Seite auftrat war Una Merkel, die später über David Wayne sagte: „Ich liebte David. Ich glaube er ist einer der besten Schauspieler die es gibt. Er ist so gut, dass die gar nicht wissen, wo sie ihn besetzen sollen!“
Im Fernsehen war Wayne bis Ende der 80iger Jahre in unzähligen Serien zu sehen. Er spielte Mad Hatter in einigen Episoden von „Batman“ und war 1978 eine Staffel lang in „Dallas“ zu sehen.
1988 zog er sich vom Showbusiness langsam zurück, um sich um seine kranke Frau zu kümmern, mit der er seit 1948 verheiratet war. Nach deren Tod 1993 lebte er noch zwei Jahre abgeschieden in seinem Haus in Beverly Hills, wo David Wayne am 9. Februar 1995 starb.
